We are seeking a highly qualified Site Safety Manager to oversee and manage safety protocols, compliance and incident investigations for heavy civil construction projects in the LA Metro area. The on-site Safety Manager will play a crucial role in promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture, ensuring adherence to safety regulations, and implementing effective safety measures to mitigate risks. The Site Safety Manager will work with Project Managers and Superintendents and report to the Regional Safety Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Stay updated on relevant safety laws and guarantees that all work is performed in accordance with approved (MUTCD) (METRO) (CAL-OSHA) manuals, internal policies and procedures, contract documents, and good engineering practices.
  • Reviews 811 dig alert regulations and underground safety activities.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety protocols and procedures to minimize workplace hazards and promote a safe working environment.
  • Actively promote a strong safety culture among all employees and contractors through training, communication, and leading by example.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, environmental regulations, and local safety ordinances.
  • Review and implement emergency response plans and procedures to effectively respond to incidents and emergencies on construction sites.
  • Conduct daily inspections of equipment, machinery, and workplace conditions to identify and address any unsafe conditions or unsafe work practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and other safety-related documentation.
  • Organize and conduct regular safety meetings with project teams to discuss safety issues, share best practices, and reinforce safety protocols.
  • Track and analyze incident metrics to conduct safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
  • Plans, implements, manages, and maintains comprehensive environmental safety & health programs on premises or at project site locations.
  • Provides project management team with guidance on health and safety and confirm project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Collaborates with division safety manager to implement Emergency Action Plans and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, conducts follow-up investigations, and assist claims managers.
  • Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
  • Participates in team meetings and provides regular on-site project observations, jobsite inspections, assist with implementation of (THA’s) and toolbox talks.
  • Identify trends, evaluate the effectiveness of safety measures, and implement improvements as needed.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skill and Ability

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Minimum of five years of heavy civil construction experience, including at least two years of full-time responsibility for construction safety programs.
  • Current certification in good standing as a Construction Health & Safety Technician and Red Cross (or equivalent) First Aid and CPR.
  • Must be assigned full time to the worksite whenever work is in progress.
  • At least two years of underground/heavy civil/non-construction safety experience, with a strong familiarity with occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Previous experience and training in confined space procedures and air monitoring, as well as a thorough understanding of four-gas meter instruments, including calibration procedures.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting during study periods, meetings, seminars and training sessions.
  • Seeing and observing at close proximity detailed technical specifications and at a distance in observing and making visual assessments at job sites.
  • Walking job sites and other locations including excavations, scaffolds, roofs and elevated platforms to observe the work. 
  • Listening to conversations and responses at job sites, job offices and other locations where noise levels are present. Using phones, radios and hand signals.
  • Lifting and carrying of training and clerical materials and safety equipment. 
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle to travel to job site visits and attend meetings on behalf of the company. Good driving record required.
  • Job involves exposure to all weather conditions for extended periods including hot, cold, wet and humid conditions as well as exposure to high noise levels and working in elevated or excavated areas. Job sites typically will include uneven surfaces and may require climbing ladders and scaffolding to review site safety equipment.

Annual Salary Range: $100,000 - $130,000.
Relocation assistance will be provided to candidates outside of the local area on a case-by-case basis.
